Film Screen & Discussion: "An Unfinished Journey" on the situation of Afghan women
Festival "Femmes" - Geneva
The development organisation IAMANEH Switzerland is committed committed to improving sexual and reproductive rights and health, as well as reducing gender-based violence. and has been organising a film festival in Basel raising awareness about the situation of women since 2016. This year, the festival also takes place in Geneva and we are excited to be a part of a discussion, moderated by our Head of Global Engagement, Sarah Noble, following the screening of "An Unfinished Journey" on 13 November 2024.
About the event
The event consists of a screening of the film ‘An Unfinished Journey’, followed by a discussion with speakers on the situation of Afghan women after the Taliban takeover in 2021. The aim is to raise awareness, exchange views and identify ways of working together to support Afghan women and keep the global spotlight on this crisis.
The event is organised by IAMANEH Switzerland, an organisation working to improve access to healthcare, protect against gender-based violence and empower women and families. Now in its third year, their ‘Femmes’ festival aims to raise public awareness of the issues surrounding gender equality and the fight against violence against women, through films, discussions and personal accounts.
This will be followed by a discussion with Negina Yari, civil society activist and expert in education and peace, Sandrine Giroud, President of the Geneva Bar Association, and Nargis Nehan, activist and former Afghan politician. The discussion will be moderated by Sarah Noble, Head of Global Engagement at the Caux Initiatives of Change Foundation.
The event is organised by IAMANEH Switzerland with the support of the Office for the Promotion of Equality and the Prevention of Violence (BPEV) of the Canton of Geneva, as part of the 25 November - Geneva Campaign.
About the film
The Taliban’s takeover in 2021 forced four women—three former parliamentarians and a journalist—to resign from their positions overnight and leave the country for their own safety. In exile in Canada, separated from their families, heartbroken, and fearful for the women they left behind, these four women take it upon themselves to mobilise their community and local politicians to take action. They know that the Taliban will restrict women’s rights like never before.
The documentary An Unfinished Journey highlights the ongoing fight for gender equality in Afghanistan, reminding us of how fragile equity and justice can be for all of us.
