Geneva Democracy Dialogues

The Geneva Democracy Dialogues are designed to facilitate open, inclusive, and informed discussions on challenges for democracy, foster collaboration and innovation, and generate actionable recommendations. Held in May, and during the Geneva Democracy Week in October, they are a part of the wider programme of Caux Initiatives of Change Foundation on Revitalising Democracy Across Europe and the Wider World.

The first edition of the Geneva Democracy Dialogue was organised on 23 May 2024 by Caux Initiatives of Change Foundation, with the support of the European Union Delegation, and in partnership with the Kofi Annan Foundation on the theme "How can Narratives help Revitalise Democracy in Europe?"

9 May 2024: How can Narratives help Revitalise Democracy in Europe?

The first Geneva Democracy Dialogue took place against the backdrop of a global “mega election year” and on the heels of the European elections. The theme of this first dialogue was: "How can Narratives help Revitalise Democracy in Europe?" The 2-hour event explored the power of narratives on democracy, in particular positive narratives, using a format with 3-4 short interventions that served as discussion starters, followed by a conversation with participants from diplomatic missions, international organisations and civil society.

9 October 2024: What does democracy mean to you?

The second Geneva Democracy Dialogue focussed on the various narratives of democracy that are used and understood across generations. Participants and speakers engaged with this theme by exploring a central question: What does democracy mean to you as well as to your work and engagement?
They discussed how narratives of democracy are mobilised, explicitly or not, when engaging on issues such as climate change, peace, and social inequalities.
