Portrait by Mohammed Aref

Born in Afrin, Syria, in 1976, Dilawer Dildar discovered his passion for painting at the age of 10. In a country where his only real freedom was art and poetry, he became a passionate advocate for peace and democracy. Since moving to Switzerland in 2015, he has exhibited in galleries across Switzerland, Germany and Kurdistan. Even during the pandemic, he has continued to share his art through virtual exhibitions.

For Dilawer, art is more than creativity: it is a voice for the oppressed, a tribute to freedom and a celebration of the beauty of life.

His paintings capture the pain of suffering, the hope of peace and the vibrant colours of cultural unity.

The title - "Suspended Horizons" -  reflects the essence of my work, which explores the quest for freedom, peace and the human experience of migration. "Suspended Horizons" evokes the feeling of limbo between the past and the future, a state of waiting in which the individual finds themselves between departure and arrival, hope and doubt. Through my paintings, I seek to capture this experience of constant travel, where the stories remain unfinished and the paths uncertain, but hope and the search for meaning are ever present.

Dilawer Dildar's exhibition was set up at the Caux Palace in collaboration with Andrea Dora Wolfskämpf/Private P'Arts, and Anne-Catherine Sutermeister as part of the event Caux Encounters, a day organised on 15 March 2025 by Caux Initiatives of Change, to share our experiences and to offer an opportunity to immerse ourselves in a vibrant mix of culture and community.
