Josephine A. Apira, born and raised in Uganda, is currently a refugee living in the UK. She is a human rights activist and is the present Chair of the Ugandan Sustainable Development Initiative (USDI). In 1986, Josephine was running the World Bank’s regional reconstruction programme in Northern Uganda, when President Museveni came to power. After witnessing numerous atrocities being committed in Northern Uganda by Museveni’s National Resistance Army (NRA), she fled firstly to Southern Sudan, then to Kenya, before being granted a visa to enter the UK. In the UK, she campaigned for and raised issues of human rights violation with the Red Cross and other human rights organizations. She has also worked as an advisor to unaccompanied children with the British Refugee Council.
