Gareth Phillips
Gareth Phillips is Manager of the Climate and Environment Finance Division in the African Development Bank, based in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Gareth has over 25 years’ experience in climate change and sustainability. His team at the AfDB works to source climate and environmental finance from a range of funds including the Climate Investment Funds, GCF and GEF. Trained as a forester with degrees from the Universities of Aberdeen and Oxford, Gareth has worked in a wide variety of sectors on greenhouse gas accounting, inventory verification, the Clean Development Mechanism and Emission Trading Systems. Gareth is currently working on a range of initiatives including the development of the Adaptation Benefits Mechanism to facilitate public and private sector investment in adaptation; the development of Green Banks in Africa; plastic recycling; and fundraising for investments into sustainably-managed commercial forestry plantations as well as mainstreaming of Green Growth into AfDB’s activities.
